The current Knight Commander of Ards is Mr David McCorkell, KStJ. He took over as Knight Commander on St John's Day 2021, succeeding The Viscount Brookeborough, KG, KStJ.

Career

David is His Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of County Antrim and Chairman of the NI Lord-Lieutenants. He was appointed Lord-Lieutenant by Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in June 2019. He was made a Knight of Justice of the Order of St John in March 2021. Prior to that, David had a long career in Investment Management, where he was a Board Director (and later Head of Investment Management) of a FTSE 250 company.

Family Legacy

David's family have a long-standing connection with the Commandery of Ards and delivering voluntary first aid and care. His great uncle, Sir Dudley McCorkell, served with the combined St John & Red Cross Committee during WW1. He later served as Deputy Commissioner, Commandery Hospitaller and sat on the Commandery's first Chapter. He became a Knight of Justice in 1957. David's parents continued the family association with both the Red Cross and the Order of St John. His mother founded the Londonderry Branch of the Red Cross in 1962 and his father was appointed as a Commander of the Order of St John in 1991, joining Chapter. David's son, Christopher, is a Member of the Order and serves on both the Commandery and Priory Ceremonial Staffs.
